Ippodo DHL Shipping Rate Increase (1 Oct 2026): What Changes

On 28 September 2026 Ippodo emailed customers of its Global Online Shop to say that DHL, one of the carriers it ships through, is revising its international rates. The new rates apply to orders placed from 1 October 2026 at 10:00 AM Japan Standard Time, three days after the notice. That is the same day as Ippodo's own matcha price revision, which we covered in detail in Ippodo's 2026 matcha price increase. This post explains what Ippodo actually said and what it left out, converts the cutoff to your local time, and covers what you can do to keep your cost per gram down.

What did Ippodo announce about DHL shipping?

Ippodo says DHL told it that it cannot absorb rising costs at their current contract rates and fee structure, so international DHL rates are going up. The notice makes three concrete points. The new rates apply to orders placed on or after 1 October 2026, 10:00 AM JST. The United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe are singled out as significantly affected, with some rates expected to rise by more than 50%. And to see the change for your own order, you need to check the fee shown at checkout, because Ippodo did not publish a before-and-after rate table.

When is the cutoff in my time zone?

The change is keyed to when you place the order, and the cutoff is 10:00 AM JST on 1 October 2026. Japan does not use daylight saving time, so the conversion is simple:

• US Pacific (PDT): 6:00 PM, Tuesday 30 September
• US Eastern (EDT): 9:00 PM, Tuesday 30 September
• UK (BST): 2:00 AM, Wednesday 1 October
• Central Europe (CEST): 3:00 AM, Wednesday 1 October
• Sydney (AEST): 11:00 AM, Wednesday 1 October

For readers in the Americas, the old rate ends on the evening of 30 September, not on 1 October. If you plan to order on "the first", you will already be too late.

Which countries are hit hardest?

Ippodo names the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe as the regions most affected, and says some rates there are expected to rise by more than 50%. It does not say which routes, which weight bands, or how much other regions such as Australia or Asia will rise, so we won't guess. Ippodo also says you will only see your new rate at checkout. The practical upshot is for small orders: if one or two 20 g boxes have to carry an international shipping fee that rises by half, shipping becomes a much bigger share of what you pay per gram of tea.

Why is DHL raising Ippodo's shipping rates?

Ippodo passes on two reasons from DHL. The first is higher global operating costs: currency swings and inflation, plus labour and fuel, which are rising fastest in major markets such as the United States. The second is the cost of delivering to individuals. Every order on Ippodo's global shop goes to a person rather than a business, and home delivery costs far more per parcel to collect, sort and deliver.

This is a separate increase from DHL's normal yearly one. DHL Express already raised US account rates by an average of 5.9% from 1 January 2026, citing inflation, currency and regulatory costs, and said the change would vary by country. Ippodo's notice describes a contract-level renegotiation on top of that, which is why the numbers are so much bigger.

Does this come on top of the matcha price increase?

Yes, and the timing matters. Ippodo's matcha prices go up by 17% to 50% on the same day, 1 October 2026. Kanza goes from ¥10,000 to ¥15,000, Ummon-no-mukashi from ¥4,000 to ¥5,000, and Ikuyo-no-mukashi from ¥1,200 to ¥1,400, all per 20 g box. So an order placed after the cutoff costs more twice over: the tea itself costs more and so does the shipping.

US buyers also have a third cost that shipping fees do not include. The United States suspended its duty-free de minimis exemption for all countries from 29 August 2025, so a low-value parcel from Japan no longer enters duty-free. Fortune reported US tariffs of 15% on Japanese matcha. Duties are charged separately from the DHL fee Ippodo shows at checkout.

How can I keep Ippodo shipping costs down?

Order less often and put more in each order. Much of an international shipping fee is the fixed cost of handling one parcel, so a single order spreads it over more grams. Splitting the same tea across several small orders pays that fixed cost again each time. Ippodo's own reasoning makes this point: the extra cost comes from processing each individual parcel.

In practice:

• If you were going to order anyway, do it before the cutoff. One combined order before 10:00 AM JST on 1 October avoids both the new DHL rate and the new matcha prices.
• Buy only what you'll drink while it's fresh. An opened 20 g box is roughly a month of daily bowls, so a big haul gives you stale powder, not savings.
• Compare the checkout total, not the list price. After 1 October, a retailer that stocks Ippodo in your own country may cost less overall once international shipping and duties are included.

Is Ippodo planning to fix international shipping?

Ippodo says it is working on improvements to its international logistics, with the aim of making delivery easier in future, but that "the full scope of the solutions is not yet finalized." It gives no timeline and no details, so treat it as a statement of intent rather than something to wait for. Ippodo also calls international shipping a major barrier for its overseas customers and says this change makes it worse.
