The tins you want are not hidden, they are sold out, and when they return the window can be short and at an awkward hour for your time zone. This playbook covers how restocks actually work at the shops that matter, what to prepare, what each shop will cancel, and how to find out the moment a tin is back, based on what the shops themselves say.
Why does matcha sell out so fast in 2026?
Overseas demand has outrun the leaf supply. The Global Japanese Tea Association's April 2026 report states: "Strong demand for matcha in Europe and the United States has tightened supply of domestically produced tea leaves." Ippodo's notice of 19 February 2026 reported Kyoto matcha prices at 2.6 times the previous year and warned that it "may implement temporary suspensions or purchase limits on other products." Marukyu Koyamaen's May 2026 notice adds that it stopped announcing restock dates to avoid server breakdown from high traffic and third-party bots. The result on 21 October 2026 was that 48 of the 89 single tins we checked at eight houses were sold out, and four houses had no single tin in stock at all.

How does each shop actually handle restocks?
There are three patterns. Some houses keep most tins listed and limit quantities, some restock at random with no warning, and a few release announced batches. The table below records what each shop says on its own pages as of 21 October 2026, and where a page states nothing we say so rather than guess. For the full buying steps at one shop, see our guides to Marukyu Koyamaen, Horii Shichimeien, Nakamura Tokichi, Fukujuen, Yugen Kyoto and Hatoya.
| Shop | How restocks work | Order limit | Stock on 21 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marukyu Koyamaen | Random restocks, Mon to Fri 9:00 to 17:30 Japan time. No dates announced since 13 May 2026. Not every grade or size returns each time. | Not stated in the notice. Orders suspected of resale are rejected. | 0 of 19 single tins |
| Horii Shichimeien | Announced batches. The latest notice, posted 3 Sept 2026, set the release for Thursday 24 Sept at 14:00 JST. | 7 matcha items per order, plus a cap per product. Duplicate orders are cancelled without refund. | 0 of 12 single tins |
| Ippodo (global store) | Most tins stay listed. Limits apply and may change without notice. No schedule found on the pages we read. | 10 per order for 20 g boxes, 2 per order for 100 g bags. | 10 of 11 single tins |
| Nakamura Tokichi | Mostly in stock. No restock schedule or limit stated on the matcha page. | Not stated on the page. | 15 of 16 single tins |
| Fukujuen | In stock. No restock schedule or limit stated on the matcha page. | Not stated on the page. | 12 of 12 single tins |
| Yugen Kyoto | Mostly in stock. Its single-origin Tsujiki Goko was sold out. No schedule stated. | Not stated on the page. | 4 of 5 single tins |
| Hatoya | All six premium matchas sold out. No restock date or limit printed. | Not stated on the page. | 0 of 6 single tins |
| Hoshino Seichaen | Japanese-language domestic store only. All tins sold out. Some listings give a ship-from date, such as 1 November. | 3 cans per order noted on Hoju. | 0 of 8 single tins |

What should you set up before a restock happens?
Do these before any alert goes off, because registering during a restock costs minutes that popular grades do not last. Marukyu Koyamaen's FAQ states "You must have an account in order to make a purchase," so account creation is not optional there.
- Create the account on each shop you care about and stay logged in on the device you will use.
- Save your full billing and shipping address. Marukyu Koyamaen's checkout asks for the shipping address in English.
- Check that your card can pay in Japanese yen. Marukyu Koyamaen charges only in yen through Stripe and accepts major cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Alibaba Pay, so a wallet button avoids typing card details.
- Note the exact products and sizes you will accept, because not every grade or size returns in each restock. Two or three acceptable options beat one.
- Set your time zone window, using the table below, so you know which hours are live.
What time do restocks happen in your time zone?
Marukyu Koyamaen restocks only Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 17:30 Japan time. Japan has no daylight saving, so the window never moves in Tokyo, but it moves for you when your clocks change. The conversions below come from the IANA time zone database: Europe changes on 25 October 2026, the United States on 1 November 2026, and Sydney moved to summer time on 4 October. For North America the window lands on the evening before, so a Thursday window in Japan is a Wednesday night for you. Horii Shichimeien states its times in Japan time too, such as 14:00 for the 24 September release, so convert the same way.
| City | Marukyu Koyamaen window now | After the clocks change |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (no daylight saving) | 9:00 to 17:30 | 9:00 to 17:30 |
| Singapore | 8:00 to 16:30 | 8:00 to 16:30 |
| Sydney | 11:00 to 19:30 (summer time since 4 Oct) | Same until the clocks go back in April |
| Berlin or Paris | 2:00 to 10:30 | 1:00 to 9:30 from 25 Oct |
| London | 1:00 to 9:30 | 0:00 to 8:30 from 25 Oct |
| New York | 20:00 to 4:30, the evening before | 19:00 to 3:30, the evening before, from 1 Nov |
| Los Angeles | 17:00 to 1:30, the evening before | 16:00 to 0:30, the evening before, from 1 Nov |
How many tins can you buy, and what gets orders cancelled?
Limits differ by shop, and breaking them can cost you the order. Ippodo's product pages cap 20 gram boxes at 10 per order and 100 gram bags at 2, and say "We are currently limiting purchases of matcha products" with limits that "may change without notice based on stock availability." Horii Shichimeien allows 7 matcha items per order plus a per-product cap, and cancels orders without notice or refund when it judges that several come from one customer. Marukyu Koyamaen rejects orders suspected of resale, and since November 2024 charges 10 percent of the order's value when it deems a purchase to be for resale. Hoshino Seichaen's listing for Hoju asks for no more than 3 cans per order. Buy for yourself, with one account and one address.
Should you use a bot or a refresh script?
No. Marukyu Koyamaen says it stopped announcing restock dates partly because of "third party bots detected," which made the shopping experience worse for most customers, so scripted traffic is a problem the shop says it is dealing with. A reload loop also helps little when the shop restocks only some products and sizes each time, because a refreshed page may show nothing you want. The fair and effective approach is to be logged in and ready, then act on a signal that a specific product has returned.
How can an alert catch the restock for you?
An alert replaces the refreshing, so you are not watching a page at 3 a.m. Matcha Alert Club's Discord posts a message when a tracked product returns, such as "@Marukyu Koyamaen www.marukyu-koyamaen.co.jp - Isuzu is now in stock!", from a scraper that re-checks each tracked shop more than twice a minute. A useful alert of any kind links straight to the product, covers the shops you actually buy from, and lets you choose a few acceptable grades. The alert does not buy for you or reserve stock, so the earlier steps still decide whether you get the tin: an account, a saved address and payment, and a ready wallet.
Never miss the next restock
Four of eight houses had no single tin in stock when we checked. Get a Discord alert the moment the one you want is back.
Join the Community on Discord (Whop page for the Discord community, opens in a new tab)What if the tin sells out before you check out?
Have a second choice ready rather than panic-buying an unfamiliar tin. Marukyu Koyamaen says it will restock sold-out products as soon as possible, and similar grades from another house can fill the gap while you wait: our price comparison lists the cheapest and typical tin at eight houses, and the Marukyu Koyamaen restock guide walks through the checkout steps. Yamamasa Koyamaen and Kanbayashi Shunsho sell abroad only through partner retailers, so watch several shops at once for Yamamasa and Kanbayashi. For Ippodo, compare the total landed cost before you order, using our guide to Ippodo's DHL shipping rates.
Where can you watch matcha reviews and how-tos?
These videos come from the tea makers themselves and from independent reviewers who bought the tins with their own money. They show the tin and powder colour, the whisking, the foam and the tasting notes. Watching one before you order is a cheap way to judge colour, froth and flavour. Treat the opinions as one person's taste, and check the price and stock on the shop's own page.
FAQ
What time does Marukyu Koyamaen restock matcha?
At random, only on Japanese weekdays between 9:00 and 17:30 Japan time, according to the notice updated 13 May 2026. It does not announce dates and does not answer restock questions by email, phone or social media. For New York that window falls on the evening before, from 20:00 to 4:30 while daylight saving lasts. Not every grade or size returns in each restock.
Does Ippodo restock on a schedule?
We found no restock schedule on Ippodo's pages. Its global store kept 10 of 11 single tins in stock on 21 October 2026, with limits of 10 per order on 20 g boxes and 2 on 100 g bags. The pages say limits may change without notice, and a February 2026 notice warns of temporary suspensions or purchase limits.
Which shops announce restock dates?
Horii Shichimeien does. Its notice posted 3 September 2026 set a release for Thursday 24 September at 14:00 Japan time, with 7 matcha items per order. Marukyu Koyamaen's notice of 13 May 2026 ended announced dates, citing server overload and third-party bots. Most other houses we checked state no schedule on their matcha pages.
Why is my country missing from the Marukyu Koyamaen shipping list?
The shop says it adjusts the countries it serves at random, to give buyers in different time zones a fairer chance. If shipping to your country is temporarily suspended, the country disappears from the drop-down list and no shipping cost appears at checkout. The only remedy is to try again at a later restock, when your country may be back on the list.
Can I buy several tins for friends or to resell?
Keep orders personal. Marukyu Koyamaen rejects orders it suspects are for resale and, since November 2024, applies a 10 percent charge when it deems a purchase to be for reselling. Horii Shichimeien cancels duplicate orders from the same customer without refund, and Ippodo caps quantities per order, so buy what you will drink.
