Kanbayashi Shunsho is one of Uji's oldest tea houses, with a family history of fifteen generations since around 1560, and outside Japan its matcha reaches buyers through retailers rather than a house shop I could verify. That makes stock patchy. This guide covers where the tins are sold, what the shops say about limits, and how to get alerted, using pages checked on October 10, 2026.
Where can you buy Kanbayashi Shunsho matcha?
From specialty retailers. Sazen Tea lists the widest lineup I found, about 25 blends across the principal range plus blends made for the Urasenke, Omotesenke, Sohenryu and Enshuryu tea schools, in 20g, 40g, 100g and 200g sizes. The Steeping Room, a US shop, sells individual grades such as Biwa no Shiro and Soumei no Mukashi. Matcha Alert Club tracks Sazen Tea, The Steeping Room and Ujicha Matcha for this brand, and I could not find an official overseas shop to track alongside them.

How often does Kanbayashi Shunsho matcha restock?
Unpredictably, and not on a published schedule. Every retailer orders from Japan on its own cycle, so a grade can vanish at one shop and appear at another the same week. On October 10, 2026, The Steeping Room listed Biwa no Shiro as sold out in both the 40g and 100g cans, with a price range of $26 to $58 and no notify-me feature on the page. The wider backdrop is the matcha shortage reported by NBC News, with higher prices and thinner supply.
If your usual grade is sold out, the neighbouring Kanbayashi Shunsho blends are close substitutes. The usucha grades step in price by a few dollars per 20g, so a sold-out Biwa no Shiro leaves Konomi no Shiro or Yuzuriha Mukashi nearby.
Which Kanbayashi Shunsho grades should you target?
Choose by use and by cost per gram. The table lists Sazen Tea's principal range on October 10, 2026. The usucha line runs from Ryo no Kage at $8.10 per 20 g to Gokumukashi at $22.68, and the koicha line from Matsukazemukashi at $12.96 to Hatsumukashi at $43.20. The 100 g can is cheaper per gram, but by very different amounts: about 24 percent less for Ryo no Kage and 15 percent for Biwa no Shiro, yet only 0.5 percent for Hatsumukashi. Buy the bigger can for the cheaper grades, and only for one you already know you like. Matsukazemukashi and Biwa no Shiro cost the same, $12.96 per 20 g, but one is koicha and the other usucha, so match the grade to how you whisk.
| Grade | Type | 20 g can | 100 g can | Per g (20 g) | Per g (100 g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hatsumukashi | Koicha | $43.20 | $214.92 | $2.16 | $2.15 |
| Atomukashi | Koicha | $38.88 | $187.92 | $1.94 | $1.88 |
| Babamukashi | Koicha | $30.24 | $144.72 | $1.51 | $1.45 |
| Hijirimukashi | Koicha | $22.68 | $106.92 | $1.13 | $1.07 |
| Sazumimukashi | Koicha | $18.36 | $88.02 | $0.92 | $0.88 |
| Zuihou | Koicha | $16.20 | $71.28 | $0.81 | $0.71 |
| Matsukazemukashi | Koicha | $12.96 | $55.08 | $0.65 | $0.55 |
| Gokumukashi | Usucha | $22.68 | $106.92 | $1.13 | $1.07 |
| Konomi no Shiro | Usucha | $18.36 | $88.02 | $0.92 | $0.88 |

| Biwa no Shiro | Usucha | $12.96 | $55.08 | $0.65 | $0.55 |
| Mozumukashi | Usucha | $10.80 | $44.28 | $0.54 | $0.44 |
| Aya no Mori | Usucha | $9.18 | $36.72 | $0.46 | $0.37 |
| Ryo no Kage | Usucha | $8.10 | $30.78 | $0.40 | $0.31 |

What limits do retailers put on Kanbayashi Shunsho orders?
Sazen Tea states no purchase quantity limit on this brand's page, but it does say reselling is strictly prohibited and asks for own-use purchases only. It advertises free shipping on carts over $150 with a tea sample gift, which can tempt a large order. The Steeping Room's Biwa no Shiro page showed no limit wording when I checked, although it caps Samidori at one per customer for a different brand. Buy for your own use, because shops cancel orders that look like resale.
What is the best way to watch for a restock?
Three shops is too many to check by hand for long. Choose two or three grades that suit your use, for example Biwa no Shiro for daily usucha with Konomi no Shiro or Yuzuriha Mukashi as backups, and keep an account with each retailer so checkout is quick. Matcha Alert Club tracks Sazen Tea, The Steeping Room and Ujicha Matcha for this brand and posts the product, price and link to our Discord when a tracked grade is listed again, with email, Telegram and web push also available. Live stock is on the Kanbayashi Shunsho brand page.
FAQ
Does Kanbayashi Shunsho sell matcha online outside Japan?
I could not find an official overseas shop for the brand. Specialty retailers carry it instead: Sazen Tea lists a large lineup, names international carriers and offers free shipping over $150, and The Steeping Room in the US lists individual grades such as Biwa no Shiro. Always check that a seller is a real tea retailer before paying.
When does Kanbayashi Shunsho matcha restock?
There is no published schedule. Each retailer receives its own shipments from Japan, so one shop can be sold out of a grade while another has it. The Steeping Room showed Biwa no Shiro sold out in both the 40g and 100g cans on October 10, 2026. An alert that watches several shops is more reliable than guessing a restock date.
Which Kanbayashi Shunsho matcha should I buy first?
For daily usucha, the Usucha grades starting around $8 to $13 per 20g can on Sazen Tea, such as Ryo no Kage, Aya no Mori and Mozumukashi, are the entry range. Biwa no Shiro is a mid-tier usucha at $12.96 for 20g. Koicha grades climb from about $13 to over $43 for 20g, so start with a small can before a large bag.
Can I buy several tins to resell?
No. Sazen Tea states that reselling Kanbayashi Shunsho products is strictly prohibited and asks buyers to purchase for their own use only. Matcha also degrades with time, heat and light, so a smaller can you finish within weeks beats a stockpile, and it leaves more for the next person waiting on a restock.
Is buying Kanbayashi Shunsho from eBay safe?
Treat it cautiously. Listings from Japan-based sellers appear for Kanbayashi Shunsho tins, but these are resellers, not the brand's own shop, with unknown storage conditions and possible duties and customs fees at delivery. Compare the per-gram price with Sazen Tea and prefer a specialty retailer whenever it has the grade in stock.
