Ippodo Matcha Is Sold Out — Here's Exactly What To Do
You found the grade you wanted, hit "Add to Cart," and got an out-of-stock page instead. This happens constantly in 2026. Here are your three options — and which other Uji producers match every Ippodo grade while you wait.
Your Three Options
Option 1: Set a Restock Alert (Best)
This is the only strategy that actually works for grades like Ummon no Mukashi. When a restock lands, it sells out within hours — often within the same business day. Manually checking the website once or twice a day is not enough. Automated alerts notify you within minutes of stock appearing, giving you a real window to purchase.

Option 2: Check the Japan Store
Ippodo operates two separate international stores: ippodotea.com (US) and global.ippodo-tea.co.jp (Japan). Their stock is maintained separately. When the US store is sold out, the Japan store sometimes still has inventory — and vice versa. International shipping from Japan adds cost but is often worth it for upper-tier grades.
Option 3: Buy an Alternative From Another Uji Producer
There is no direct substitute for a specific Ippodo blend — every tea house has its own house character. But the following alternatives closely match the quality tier and use case of each Ippodo grade and will satisfy the same underlying need while you wait for a restock.
Ippodo Alternatives by Grade
Sayaka / Ikuyo
Entry ceremonialSimilar entry-ceremonial level; brisk and bold, pairs well with lattes
One step up — balanced, naturally sweet, excellent daily drinker
Clean, bright ceremonial character; more available than Ippodo equivalents
Ummon no Mukashi
Flagship ceremonialThe closest equivalent — refined, sweet, koicha-adjacent but technically usucha only
More complex and nutty; a comparable premium daily ceremonial
Urasenke Grand Master endorsed; rounded umami, creamy body — an excellent Ummon alternative
Kan no Shiro / Kuon
Premium koichaThe standard benchmark for premium koicha; deep umami, very low bitterness
Entry koicha level; creamy and nutty, good when Unkaku is also unavailable
Urasenke-endorsed upper ceremonial; powerful, balanced, capable koicha
Kanza
PinnacleCompetition-grade koicha; the equivalent ceiling of the Marukyu lineup
Exceptional L-theanine (~40mg/g); different character but comparable prestige
The Nakamura Tokichi flagship; elite koicha, ceremonial-only grade
What NOT to Do When Ippodo Is Sold Out
- Do not buy from third-party sellers at inflated prices. Resellers occasionally list Ippodo matcha at 2–3× retail price on eBay or Amazon. This is not worth it — you cannot verify freshness or authenticity, and a restock is coming.
- Do not substitute with a non-Uji matcha and call it equivalent. The gap between authentic Uji ceremonial matcha and mass-market alternatives is significant. Patience and an alert is a better strategy than settling for a completely different product.
- Do not keep manually refreshing the product page. This is inefficient and anxiety-inducing. Set an alert once, then get on with your day.
Why Does Ippodo Keep Selling Out?
Ippodo's ceremonial matcha is constrained at the source. First-harvest Uji tencha is available once per year, from a geographically finite area, processed through stone mills running at 40 grams per hour. The 2026 matcha shortage has compressed supply further — Uji tencha auction prices rose over 116% between 2024 and 2026, meaning even the raw material available for purchase is more expensive and more competed for among producers.
At the same time, Ippodo now ships to customers across Japan, the US, Europe, and internationally — all competing for the same restocked inventory. Their reputation as the most accessible top-tier Uji producer means demand is consistently higher than their supply can sustain.
How Long Until Ippodo Restocks?
Restock timing varies by grade. Based on observed patterns in 2025–2026:
- Sayaka, Ikuyo: Typically restock weekly to bi-weekly. Usually the safest grades to find without alerts.
- Ummon no Mukashi: Restocks approximately every 2–4 weeks, but sells out within the same day. Alert is essential.
- Kan no Shiro, Seiun: Less predictable; monthly or irregular. Sometimes out of stock for extended periods at international retailers.
- Kuon, Kanza: Restock timing is irregular and Japan-priority. May be unavailable internationally for months at a time.
