Fukujuen is a Kyoto tea company established in 1790 (Kansei 2) by Iyemon Fukui, first as a tea merchant in Kamikoma, now part of Kizugawa City. Today it makes Japanese green teas including matcha, gyokuro and sencha, and sells matcha worldwide from its global online store, shipped directly from Japan.

The Story of Fukujuen
Fukujuen's own history page says the company was established in 1790 by Iyemon Fukui as a tea merchant in Kamikoma, in what is now Yamashiro-cho, Kizugawa City. Between the 1830s and 1870s it acted as a wholesaler and trading post, exporting tea through Kobe Port. In the early 1900s it pioneered mail-order sales of Uji tea using the new postal parcel system. It incorporated in 1949 and opened its first direct store at Kyoto Station in 1952. Its Shijo Tominokoji flagship in Kyoto has a tea room and offers custom blending of Uji tea.

Fukujuen sells matcha through its global online store, global.fukujuen.com, with prices in yen and taxes and shipping calculated at checkout; the store says all products ship directly from Japan. On 10 October 2026 its matcha collection listed 24 products, including Kotobuki-no-Shiro (¥1,440 per 20 g), Seijin no Shiro (¥1,800), Eisho-no-Mukashi (¥3,600), Banjo-no-Mukashi (¥5,400) and Matcha Zuien (¥7,200), plus stone-milled Shiro, Syu and Kuro grades. Independent Kyoto Tea Shop, Est. 2018
Yugen Kyoto is an independent Japanese tea shop that opened in 2018 in a renovated building near the Kyoto Imperial Palace. It sells its own blended Uji matcha in four numbered grades, #0 to #3, plus a limited single-origin Tsujiki Goko, and ships internationally from its own site. It is not affiliated with Marukyu Koyamaen's "Yugen" matcha grade.
