The Story of Hekisuen
Sazen Tea's producer page says Hekisuien was founded in 1867 by Kihei Horii and has devoted more than 150 years to Uji tea, working from Jōyō City in the Uji tea region of Kyoto. Its stated principle is "always remain humble", symbolised by the trademark "Tengu no Uji-cha", named after a long-nosed folklore spirit that reminds the house not to become arrogant. Retailer Rishi Tea describes the company as still run by the Horii family, with eighth-generation tea maker Hisaki Horii, and known for aging and blending different cultivars.
Traditional Craftsmanship
Hekisuien uses traditional stone milling, a slow process that Sazen Tea says is meant to preserve colour, aroma and smooth flavour. Rishi Tea, an importer that has worked with the house since 2010, describes its approach as aging and blending vintages of different cultivars from producers across Uji and Kyoto rather than relying on single cultivars.
