The Story of Hokoen
Sazen Tea's producer page describes Hokoen as a long-established Japanese tea producer with more than 160 years of history, based in Jōyō City, Kyoto Prefecture. It does not give an exact founding year, and we found no official Hokoen history to confirm one. The company is described as overseeing every stage of production, from growing and harvesting through blending and finishing, and as sourcing tea leaves from well-regarded fields in Japan, including farms in Jōyō where the soil is enriched by the Kizu River.

We found no official Hokoen shop in English, so outside Japan it is sold through importing retailers. On 10 October 2026 Sazen Tea listed four matcha: Ryokuhou (koicha, $54.00 per 20 g), Houki (koicha, $27.00 per 20 g), Myouju (usucha, $32.40 per 40 g) and Unryu (usucha, $19.44 per 40 g).
